We spend another day in the Gers to enjoy some time with the remaining cousins. There was a good frost in the early morning and the fog completely changed the landscape around the village.

I thought about going for a run, but in the end decided to join my cousins for breakfast instead before they headed for the train station. Needless to say I never get tired of good French bread with jam, not to mention the salted butter from Brittany to go with it.

We did have a mission to fulfill during our visit of the Gers: find a bottle of Armagnac for Hubby's brother in law. I hired my Gers cousin to help us in our quest. He asked around and was told to visit the Chateau de Busca between Condom (and yes that is the name of the town, and no it's not the same meaning in French) and Vic-Fezensac.

The castle is a of Classic Gascony style and located in the heart of Tenareze. There are in fact three Armagnac regions: Bas-Armagnac (lower Armagnac) with a very floral result is known for it's high quality products, Haut-Armagnac (high Armagnac) has a tiny production of lower quality. The Armagnac Tenareze give a product with more confit fruit taste, they are stronger and can be aged longer.

The chateau organizes visits from spring to fall, but they are always open with advance notice. We were a little late due to the fact that family meals always last longer than one thinks, but we gave them notice.

Upon our arrival we rang the bell several times to announce ourselves. It's best to ring it well to be heard from the back of the chateau. Hubby though it was neat to be truly ringing the bell.

700 ans d'histoire.

We were welcomed by one of the employees then followed by the owner: Floriane de Ferron. The chateau has only been owned by two families: the ones who built it and the family of the current owner for the last six generations. The chateau has been producing Armagnac pretty much since it was built. By the way, did you know that Armagnac is the older Eau de Vie in France? A 700 years history.

It was a little cold to taste the Armagnac in the old parts of the chateau, so it's in the office that we gathered. You should know that most Armagnac found in the stores are a blend or years. The age mentioned on the bottle is always that of the youngest eau de vie of the blend. While the Chateau de Busca offers those, what we were really interested in is to try the vintages. Meaning the product of a specific harvest.

I should tell you first that to me Armagnac is a ritual. The glass is specific, it should be taken fully in the had to warm the eau de vie. Just that means taking the time to appreciate it.
I found it interesting to compare severage vintage years. We found the 80's a little young still, more of a burn in the mouth, more alcoholic. Which is normal, the longer the eau de vie stays in the barrel the more it looses its alcohol. Although an Armagnac can not be sold if it goes under 40% alcohol.
The 70's Armagnac really got out attention. Following the tasting advices we learned to find the specificities of the years: here some walnut, there confit orange, prunes, a little vanilla maybe.
We fell in love with the 1978 vinatage with it's delicate touch of walnut and hazelnut but took the 1974 for his brother in law with its more typical prune hints.

If I love the shape of the traditional Armagnac bottles, we went for the wine bottle style, far more discreet for suitcases that would be scanned. We also wrapped them in (clean) socks, in the middle of dirty clothes (my running gear amont other things) and they came home safely.
Body and soul warmed by our tasting we then toured the site. The building is beautiful and well preservered by its owners.

Hubby was very impressed with the size of the fireplace. Well of course, back then they would put chairs by the fireplace to warm the old bones, some space was needed. To enjoy a well pictured tour I invite you to check out the article by Maisons du Sud Ouest.

Outside we glimpsed at the resting vinyards and the pigeon house. We left enchanted by our visit and producers who truly love their Armagnac, two bottles and lighter of a few Euros but for a good cause.

Back at the Grand-Parents we took upon us to follow another tradition: climb up the East tower/gate of the village, accessible from the terrace. When I think that as a child I was never afraid to be up there... as a grown-up I feel less light headed looking down. Yet it's not that high but there is a big hole in the middle.

The day ended with a beautiful sunset over the Pyrenees that we admired from the top of the tower. We couldn't have finished those few days in the Gers better.

PS: I spared you my moments of glory when the owner presented her work in English and I said it was nice because it gave the local accent to Hubby. The owner was borderline outraged as she grew up in Switzerland. Oh well, I was thinking French, since I have an odd accent when I speak. The cousin thought she was going to get mad at me.
On the way out I also graciously said oh the pretty castle of Madiban... errr Maniban. Anyhow let's just say I'm happy they let me leave with the bottles.

  1. Vic Fezensac is one of my favorite towns down there because of its crazy name. I keep imagining living there as a foreigner and trying to tell outsiders the name of my town!!

I also laugh every time I go by Condom - but mostly because a local once old me that they had to start making the town sign in wood because anglophone tourists kept stealing it and it was costing the town 500€ each time to replace it!!
