An Internship in the US: the Appartment

Pour terminer sur cette série de stage, je voudrais vous parler de l'appartement ou je vivais avec Hubby. Cet appartement faisait parti d'une magnifique bâtisse historique dont vous pouvez voir un panoramique au dessus (note: ca déforme le bâtiment, la route a gauche de la photo et a droite c'est la meme et elle ne tourne pas).
Il me semble que c'est un Docteur qui a fait construire cette demeure, depuis le site a été reconverti en plusieurs appartement avec un parking a l'arrière et un immense jardin.
La zone au centre de la photo avec plein de fenêtre et des rhododendrons en fleur c'est un espace commun, une sorte de terrasse couverte ou les gens pouvaient se retrouver.
Au sous-sol du bâtiment il y avait des espaces de stockage et un lavomatic a pieces.

To finish my internship series, I wanted to tell you about the apartment where I lived with Hubby. This apartment was part of a beautiful historical building on which you can see a panoramic above (note: the photo deforms the shape, the road seen on both ends is a same and should be straight).
I think it was a Doctor who has this splendid house build, since then the site was transformed into a series of apartment with a parking in the back and a huge backyard.
At the center of the picture where there is many windows and blooming rhododendrons is a common space, a covered porch where people could gather.
In the basement there were storage units and a coin fed lavomatic.

On rentrais par la cuisine. Nous avions en fait deux porte, l'une donnant sur la cuisine, l'une sur la chambre. C'était une cuisine de bonne taille. Nous n'avions qu'une petite table pour manger, mais pour deux c'etait suffisant. J'ai découvert la cuisson aux plaques électriques et j'ai appris a cuisiner végétarien dans cet espace.

We would enter by the kitchen. In fact we had two doors, one opening to the kitchen, the other one to the bedroom. The kitchen was of good size. We only had a small table to eat but for the tow of us it was sufficient. It's where I discovered cooking on an electric stove and where I learned to make vegetarian food.
Depuis la cuisine on accédait au salon. Espace immense, sol en bois, haut plafonds, grandes fenêtres, bibliothèque, etc. Un espace franchement fabuleux ou nous passions la plupart de notre temps si on était a la maison.
La porte de droite amène a la chambre.

From the kitchen we could access the living room. Huge space, wooden floors, high ceilings, big windows, built in library, etc. A fabulous space where we spent most of our time if we were home.
The door to the right leads to the bedroom.
On peut voir le chandelier, au fond la porte qui donne sur la salle de bain.
Avant que je n'emménage, Hubby avait un parfois une colocataire. Comme l'appartement n'avait qu'une chambre, avec sa première co-loc ils avait crées une chambre de tissu, en accrochant un tissu epais au plafond, cache derrière c'est le "placard". N'ayant pas besoin de faire chambre a part cet espace derrière le rideau était finalement pas utilise, mais nous n'avions de toute façon pas assez de meuble pour remplir tout l'espace.
Les détails du bois au sol (regardez le long des murs) et les fenêtres me manquent. Il est a noter que sous les trois fenêtres ce n'est pas un meuble mais le couvre-radiateur.

Before I moved in with Hubby he had several room mates. Since the apartment only had one bedroom, him and his first room mate created a fabric bedroom by hanging heavy fabric to the ceiling, hiden behind it was the "closet". Since we didn't need to be in separate bedrooms, this space in the back was scarcely used, but we didn't have enough furniture to fill it anyway.
I miss the wood floor details (look along the walls) and the windows. Note that under the three windows it's not a building but a radiator cover.
La salle de bain n'était pas bien grande, mais elle avait l'avantage d'avoir un de ces fabuleux bains a pied d'origine. J'ai passe bien des heures au milieu d'un bain moussant. Il faut dire que l'eau et l'électricité étaient inclus dans les coûts de location.

The bathroom wasn't big, but it had the advantage of one of the great clawfoot tub. I spent many hours in the middle of a bubble bath. I have to say that water and electricity were included in our rent.
Notre chambre, je n'en ai jamais eu d'aussi grande. Un pan de mur était semi-circulaire avec de grandes fenetres. Finalement le plus dur était de trouver comment remplir l'espace. J'adorais me réveiller avec la lumiere du soleil. Je rêve d'une chambre similaire dans le futur.

Our bedroom, I never had such a big one. A side of the wall was semi-circular with tall windows. In the end the hardest thing was to find how to fill the space. I loved to wake up with the sunlight. I dream of a similar bedroom in our future.
Et pour finir le placard... enfin presque, a l'origine c'etait le coffre-fort de la maison. Pour rentrer dans le placard il fallait donc ouvrir la porte blindée. D'ailleurs elle était tellement lourde qu'on la laissait ouverte. Vous voyiez le meuble noir sur la gauche? C'est une coffre fort a l'intérieur du coffre-fort, il date du temps du docteur. Rien a l'intérieur mais il était fait de bois et orné de jolies peintures.

And to finish the closet... well almost because originally it was the safe of the house. To enter the coset we had to open the vault door. In fact it was so heavy that we left it open. You see the black furniture on the left? It's a safe inside the safe, dating back to the Docor. Nothing inside it, but it was made of wood and had nice paintings on it.
J'ai adore vivre dans cet appartement d'une maison historique. J'espere un jour qu'on trouvera une maison avec le cachet des fenêtres et planchers anciens.

I loved living in this apartment inside a historic house. I hope one day we'll find a house with the charm of ancient windows and wood floors.

Von Ruck House
Il me semblait bien par le passe avoir trouve des informations sur la batisse.
La maison est inscrite au registre national des sites historiques et s'appelle Von Ruck House. C'est le docteur Von Ruck, specialiste en tuberculose et considéré comme un pionnier dans la medecine des poumons, qui l'a fait construire. Il est arrivée a Asheville en 1886 et est devenu l'un des physiciens les plus connus de la ville. Il a ouvert le Sanatorium Winyah et a participe a faire connaitre la ville comme un centre de traitement de la tuberculose.

Il faut savoir qu'Asheville n'étais pas bien grand et peu connu jusqu'en 1870. C'est grace aux conditions climatiques considerees comme benefiques pour les tuberculeux et l'arrivee du train en 1880 que la ville c'est developée.
George Vanderbilt qui a fait construire Biltmore Estate y est venu pour accompagner sa mere qui etait malade, de meme pour Edwin Grove venu sous les ordres du docteur et qui a ferra construire le Grove Park Inn.

Quand a la maison, Von Ruck a achete la propriété en 1904. Il y avait deja deux batisses sur le site. La plus large est devenue la maison de famille et sera reliée a la plus petite batisse par un salon de musique qui avait un orgue (il en reste des traces il me semble). A priori les maisons d'origine sont de 1900, les ajouts de 1912et 1915, l'interieur a ete retouché dans les annees 70 pour en faire des appartements. La plupart des boiseries de chene et d'ebene a l'interieur sont d'origine. A priori a l'etage il y a encore les meubles de pharmacie.


I knew I had found information on the building before.
The house is on the register of national historic sites and is called the Von Ruck House. It's Doctor Von Ruck, specialist of tuberculosis and considered to be a pioneer in pulmonary disease who had it built. He arrived in Asheville in 1886 and became one of its most notable physician. He opened the Winyah Sanatorium and participated in making Asheville a center for tuberculosis treatment.

You should know that Asheville wasn't very big until 1870. It's thanks to the climate conditions considered beneficial for tuberculosis patients and the arrival of the train in 1880 that the city developped.
George Vanderbilt who built Biltmore Estate came here with his ailing mother, same for Edwin Grove who came under doctor's orders and later built the Grove Park Inn.

Regarding the house, Von Ruck bought the property in 1904. There were already two buildings on site. The largest became the family home and later was connected to the smaller one with a music room with an organ pipe (traces of it are still there I believe). It seems the original buildings are from 1900, the additions 1912 and 1915, the inside was redone in the 1970's to transform it into apartments. The oak and magohany inside remain from the original structure. In the top story the glass front cabinets of the pharmacy remain.
