The day after Christmas we decided to go on a hike. We left at dawn (it was still dark), drove a car to the finish and had the step-father drop us at the start. We walked by the side of a field as the colors started changing in the sky. At last here is there trail's marking, we should have driven more and avoided extra walk, but no big deal.
Voilà pour vous l'une des plaques du départ qui explique le sentier.
Here is the sign at the start of the hike.
To summarize it's an old trail that the Hawaiians used to go to Lahaina, it was either a 5 miles walk culminating at 500 meters high or 5 hours of Outrigger Canoe on the ocean. We decided to take the trail that millions of feet followed on the slopes of the former volcano.
The trail is very exposed to the sun, don't forget water and sunscreen, but mainly leave early (and follow the trail the way we did). The first part of the hike is steep, the trail is made of small switch-backs and we turned around from time to time to see the light changing over the island. Before we reached the top we were able to admire the sunrise, rising behind Haleakala.
After that, the hike is easier. We were on higher elevations with an amazing view over the ocean, we saw humpback whales, ships going to Lana'i, the wind mills above us, gulches, however we were unable to find the petroglyphs mentioned in our guidebook. This side of the mountain was fairy dry, but we really enjoyed the hike. Many hours on the trail, however so satisfying. When you think the Hawaiians did the round trip within the day.
