Je me traduis alors.

A quick stop on the blog to wish you all a Merry Christmas. Pumpkin is doing well. She's been crawling since she was 6 months old, standing up against furniture since mid-October and starting to stand up on her own. She loves paper and accessorily books. She is very curious, full of joy and would rather fall asleep in the baby carries to nap. 10 months already....

Pumpkin a 5 semaines sur son pot- Pumpkin at 5 weeks over her potty

I read something about Elimination Communication (EC) in some blogs. A blogging friend had a little girl cried every time she had to
go, so I suggested EC, thinking it might help. It worked really well
with her daughter so I stored the idea in my mind. Shortly before
Pumpkin's birth, I read about it more, especially on the site diaperfreebaby.org and a few blogs too.

So what is EC?
It's
a practice where the parents observe the signs given by the baby to
eliminate and offer a receptacle in which to do so. It's nothing new. A
lot of people apply it in Asia and Africa. Thinking about it, I never
saw a pile of diapers in a documentary about Africa nor moms washing a
bunch of cloth diapers where there is little water...

Why practice EC?
Because
babies are born with the consciousness of their elimination needs. If
you've ever changed a baby, you likely noticed how they pee right as the
diaper comes of? Well it seems babies don't like to eliminate in their
diapers and stay wet. I can understand that.
In the western world,
we teach our children to eliminate in their diaper, only to tell them
two years later that they have to stop. Not so easy when you've gotten
used to it...
The benefits are that it allows to maintain the
awareness of elimination needs and allows to simplify potty training
later on and in some cases avoid the need of it altogether.
It's far more comfortable for the child who (ideally) doesn't stay in a soiled diaper. It helps to avoid diaper rash as well.
Finally it's also an additional way to bond with your child and an important way to communicate with them.

How does it work?
One has to observe the cues of the
baby (gas, concentration, baby stopping what s/he's doing, wiggling,
etc.) but also know the rhythms (baby tends to eliminate after eating,
when waking up, etc.). Finally there is also the intuition coming from
the parents (and chance).
The baby is then held over a receptacle: potty, toilet, bowl, sink or even a diaper; to eliminate.
Parents
also use a sounds as a signal. Either a different sound for each need
or the same to allow the baby to associate going to the toilet with it.
The parents can then cue the baby when he is over the receptacle so hshe
knows he can go.

And for us?
We bought a small
potty (which you can see in the photo above). In the middle of the night
as she was only 5 days old, I sent my husband to retrieve it in the
next room because I had the feeling she needed to go. I'll let you
imagine his face at my request. I had a hard time figuring out how to
hold her, but to my great surprise, she did pee in the potty. However it
was our first week at home and we still had a lot of things to figure
out so I didn't make it a priority. However we started doing a "psss"
sound whenever we heard her poo in her diaper and we would change her as
quickly as we could. We decided to use the same sound for both to
simplify things. During the 2nd week I started offering the potty at
each diaper change. Sometimes with result, sometimes not. She would
usually let me know if she was not interested by crying or squirming or
looking somewhere else.

A week later, Hubby tried on his own and
came back to the living room exclaiming that we had the most awesome
three weeks old in the world because she peed in the potty "for him".
Like me, he was hooked.
I did have a hard time figuring out elimination signs (and still do
to be honest). So it's been more about offering her the potty than
anything else. Pumpkin used to poo while eating. Not very practical for
EC. But lately she started pulling out of the breast when she has a
need. So I head to the changing table, remover her diaper and offer her
the potty. What a thrill when she does eliminate, it's also much easier
to clean. In fact I'm more and more holding her over the toilets (I seat
facing the back of it and hold her against me) so all I have to do is
flush, and I can do it at other people's places.

When I head that babies
are not cognitively developed enough to understand at that age, I smile.
Pumpkin can now hold her pee between me removing her diaper and
offering the toilets. But it's mostly when she needs to poo that I'm
impressed. 4am, she wakes up needing to eliminate. She cries, I put her
on the toilet and she poos, calming down immediately, well at least
until she's done and makes it clear that it's time to eat. During the
day, I take her off the breast, put her on the toilet and watch the
concentration on her face as she pushes (sometimes turning a little red,
it's funny).
While we still have a lot to learn in regards to
learning her signals, we are convinced that this works. What's great
with EC is that it works even part time (doing it for a few hours a day)
because babies are very adaptable. So we'll be able to continue even
when I go back to work.

The Diaper Dilema

Before I tell you about Elimination Communication, I'd like to share how
we got to it. So here is a post that I wrote back in the fall and
didn't publish:

As I look at the calender and realize how <s>much</s> little time we have left until the Lil'One could be here I feel like freaking out. There is so much I did not realize when it comes to babies. Oh sure I could go with the flow and accept everything I'm told like the majority of the population. Or I can question things because I don't agree with the system. Unfortunately I'm of the second batch, and let me tell you, it takes a lot of time and energy.

Let's start with something simple: diapers. I was at a supermarket today to register for the small things. You know diapers, wipes and what not. I looked at the limited choice on the shelves and I ended up not scanning one single package. Call me crazy, but I looked for ingredients. I wanted to know what went in the diapers. Well, not one of those told me anything and the "natural" versions of the big brands were outrageously expensive. I can't help it, I just don't like the idea of putting chlorine on the Lil'One's skin. I also found that american diapers contain trace amounts of dioxin (banned in most countries), and that gel like substance, I've heard stories of diapers opening up with the gel beads getting on the skin and becoming an irritant.

So this brought me to the Littlest Birds, a local Eco-oriented baby store. I started looking at the cloth diapering options. I have to say, yes they are a little more work since they have to be dried, but I felt so much more comfortable at the idea of having those on my kid's bum. The only problem, the one size fits all only works once the kid is about 10 pounds, so several weeks after birth. This meant more research...

A few hours later of research later and we came down to two options: 1)use a healthier (if there is one) brand of disposable diapers the first month because it would not be cost effective to get all the cloth diaper supplies for a newborn. 2)Use a cloth diaper service that would provide us with most of what we need and clean it.
Although with the idea of 70 diapers used every week (Seriously??!!) I think I'm also going to look into a technique called Elimination Communication and see if it's something our child is ok with. This technique is based on the idea of reading cues from your baby/child when they need to pee or poop and hold the child over a receptacle. It's kind of like starting potty training at birth (or whenever you decide to start).

Edit: In the enf we decided to use disposables the first week to make it easier on us. We then switched to using Smarty Pants,
a local cloth diaper service, which we love. It allowed us to see if
cloth diapers worked for us. We also started supplementing with EC.

While I write this, my baby is already 2 months old. Time flies.

The first week are a serious learning curve. Finding the rythme, or lack there of. We refered to it as "living on newborn time". The first 2-3 weeks she slept a lot. We were lucky that she didn't confuse night and day. However the sleep times were short. An average of 2h but as short as 45 min and as long as 3h. The rare times when she slept that long were because she was against us. Mandatory nap for me to survive.
Once the first weeks were over she started having a harder time falling asleep during the day at times. Thankfully as soon as we put her in the Ergo (baby carrier) she would go to sleep.

She did have some awake times in the morning. I would hold her on my lap and watch her cross eyes and do funny faces or check out her environment. Between the numerous naps I would feed her, changer her diaper and start over again.
We increased the heat in out house since I spent a lot of time lightly dressed to allow for easy breastfeeding and a lot of skin to skin. Once the breastfeeding learning curve was through it went well. At 10 days she had regained her birth weight, even though a lactation consultant had told us that she wasn't eating enough and that I should pump and supplement feed her with my milk. So the very first week of her life, I learned to trust my instinct.

Cote

Her temperament is pretty easy. She hardly cries unless she's hungry or can't fall asleep on her own. As early as 2 weeks old, she started lifting her head during tummy time and turn it from side to side. She gave us smiles while asleep. She's very attracted by black and white photos above our changing table as well as the painting of Toulouse in the living room. We also started practicing EC (Elimination Communication), I'll talk about it more later, but she understands when we offer her the potty. The umbilical stump fell at 2 weeks even.

We bought some curried almond pate at our Earthfare supermarket. It didn't last long in our house with the "gourmands". But prepared items like that get pricey when you have to purchase them often. So I decided to attempt my own at home. The attempt came out very well and it's now my new favorite way to eat almonds.

8 cm.

Hubby a mis "When the Man Comes Around" chante par Johnny Cash.

8 centimeters. Upon those words, a wave of relief washed over me. It was
not early labor after all. Far from it! I had tears of joy and relief
in my eyes. I told Hubby we were about to meet our Pumpkin. Meanwhile
the midwife called the hospital to let them know we were on our way,
adding that the membranes were bulging. She also apologized for not
sending us there earlier.
So we went straight to the hospital, which
thankfully wasn't far. Besides a contraction right at the entrance we
were able to get to Labor and Delivery pretty fast and I was led to a
water room.
First they had to listen to the baby though. As I was
about to remove my clothe, at the foot of the bed, I felt something and
found myself drenched in warm liquid. My water broke I announced. Were
you wearing pad they asked me. Yes, I said, not that it makes any
difference. The nurse then listened to Pumpkin's heartbeat which was perfect.

She then started to fill the tub, but the water was brown so I was
sent under the shower instead. Thankfully the water issue was cleared
and I was allowed there after several contractions. The water didn't
bring the relief I expected during contractions, but it was very
relaxing in between. I would ask for Hubby for every one of them,
requesting counter-pressure on my lower back, as we learned during our
birthing class; meanwhile I would hang on to the tub's edge where my
godmother helped me. I had asked Hubby to play Emma Shapplin in the
background.
At some point I felt nauseous, the nurse brought in a bag and I couldn't help but laugh. It looked like a giant condom. I shared the thought in French to my Godmother.
The
pressure kept on increasing and I think I started pushing a little
during contractions. When the midwife came back (another patient was
giving birth at the same time), she asked me to use the bathroom and said she would check me after that. I didn't want to move but obeyed.
Once on the bed the midwife was gone. So I continued to labor there,
waiting. The urge to push kept on increasing and I slowly gave in to it.
Finally she came back, checked me and announced the welcomed 10cm. I
could really start pushing. It was 12:15pm. I started pushing on my
side, then asked for the squatting bar. I never got to use it.

At 12:24pm, the nurse who had been checking regularly on Pumpkin's
heartbeat, suddenly had a hard time finding it. I knew right away that
something was wrong. Later the midwife told me that when the heartbeat
came out at 70, they first thought it was mine... Thankfully I never
heard past that because her heart then dropped to 50 and 30.
I was
told to get on my back, I heard the nurse say "I need a resident" in an
urgent tone. Within seconds the room filled up with 8 more people,
bright lights were lit, my feet placed in stirrups. All I knew was that I
had to get the baby out quickly. I can tell you that I put all my heart
into it.! The doctor announced that she had to use a vacuum. I approved. I was
told later that I still did 90% of the work as she only used the vacuum
to prevent the body from going back in between pushes. Meanwhile an
oxygen mask was place on my face (never really felt the difference) and
an IV was inserted into my arm... while I pushed, which prompted some
blood from spurting out. I didn't realize it but my husband it, because I
heard the midwife tell him: "Hubby, you're a little white, sit down!". Which he did, thankfully.

I remember placing my hand on my belly and saying "Hang on Pumpkin,
work with me to get you out of there." At the same time, the medical
team was encouraging me, using my name, telling me I was doing a great
job pushing. In fact at one point they asked "Are you pushing during a
contraction?" I answered that I didn't know. So they asked that I only
push during contractions. I couldn't though. The urge was too strong,
especially when the doctor readjusted the vacuum (which in fact had
detached itself). Then she said "episiotomy". I screamed "No, not the
episiotomy. No!" But there was no choice, nor time to discuss or even
have a local anesthesia and I had to give in. Later the midwife
explained that if the vacuum detaches three times it's a mandatory
cesarian section per hospital policy. Better have the small cut I had
then.
A few minutes (or was it seconds) later, I felt the ring of
fire, the head was coming. I didn't have time to slow down like in the
movies, or touch the head. One more push and she was out. I barely had a
glimpse of a little body red and purplish. It was 12:37pm.

"It's a boy"
"It's a girl"
"Well which one" Asked Hubby, confused. "A girl".
The
cord was immediately cut and she was whisked away to the warming table.
"Someone needs to go with her" I said. Hubby, still shaky went by his
daughter and held her hand, hypnotized by this little being who just
made him a Dad. A few minutes later she was placed on my chest while I
pushed the placenta out.
In the end it turns out that the umbilical
cord was a little short. Our daughter, still without a name at that
point was recovering well from all the drama. We did stay several hours
in labor and delivery. Hubby played "When the man comes around' by
Johnny Cash. As for me I was hungry, which surprised the nurse. Hubby
and I admired our daughter, a little baby of barely 6lbs 0.6 ounces.
Oh, and you know what's the most amusing out of it all? She was born on her due date.

The contractions increased in intensity following the walk, but not so much in regularity. I asked Hubby to make me a baked potatoe, knowing I needed sustenance. I ate it on the bed, between two contractions but threw it up an hour or two later. So much for throw-up being a sign of transition! I hesitated to eat after that but after throwing up a second time on an empty stomach bare a few liquids, I ended up continuing to eat apple sauce. In the end I threw up three times, including twice during the night. No fun. In any case, you want to stay close to the bathroom during labor, if only because you keep on drinking and therefore peeing. So glamorous.
My godmother arrived in the early evening, allowing Hubby to take a break and eat. As for me, I was alternating positions: hands and knees in the bedroom, on the yoga ball or in the shower. Yeah for hot water. Unfortunately (or thankfully for the water bill), we don't have an on demand heater and I could only stay in the shower for so long.
Around 9pm we called the midwife on call again, but the contractions were only every 5 minutes and 30-45s long. She advised us to wait for the 4-1-1.

As the evening went on, I think things started changing without me realizing it. I think I stopped talking during contractions (except to complain about pain), while being very aware in between. I couldn't stand being touched and spent a lot of time laboring on the floor of the bathroom, between showers. I couldn't stand the yoga ball either. During contractions I would get really hot and take everything off me. Then I would cool back down and start getting cold, shivering and needing to be covered. This pattern stayed the same until the end.
I layed down on the bed and my contractions slowed down. Moving made them come more often, but I was tired. I slept a little in between. Then I got up again and for a while paced around the house, stopping to labor against the sofa or pressing my back to the bathroom counter to get counter-pressure. The pressure in my lower abdomen wouldn't go away between contractions, it was hard to manage. Tired, I laid down again and contractions dropped to every 8-9min. Hubby and I would "sleep" in between. Then a new contraction would come. I remember telling myself "I'm going to ignore it and keep on laying down". Of course it was impossible and I had to move to my knees to tolerate it, or lay against a pile of pillows. Hubby later told me that I kept on stealing his pillow, to the point where only one was left. So he would hid it by the side of the bed before coming to help me cope when a contraction would come.
At one point I went to the bathroom and whipped some blood away. I was so sure we would have to go to the hospital so we called the midwife. But again, she said it was just a sign of cervix change and to stay home. She did advise to get checked in the office in the morning. As a result we thought I was still in early-labor (between 0 and 4 cm dilated).

4:30am came and went, already 24 hours of labor. I was tired and loosing confidence that I could give birth without an epidural. I complained of the pain and started telling Hubby that at some point we would need to go to the hospital and get me an epidural. After 24 hours of early labor I could not imagine going on again for the same amount of time and still have energy to push. But he kept on telling me I was doing a good job. I wanted to hear something else.
At last 8 am came. The office was opening. We gathered our things. I knelt on the seat, facing the back of the car. We jocked that if a cop stopped us for not wearing the seatbelt right, he would likely have to let us go without a ticket. I held my godmother's hands during contractions. I think I had 2 or 3 before we got there, although it wasn't far.
I went in the waiting room wearing my pyjamas and wrapped in a blancket. I recognized a pregnant lady from our birthing class and told her "24 hours of labor and no progress". This was followed by a contraction that had me hanging out to Hubby. Poor girl, I probably scared her. At the end of the contraction, the head midwife, Jan, commented that it was a strong one, to which I answered I know, not thinking much of it. She then aske me if I had been the one laboring in the park the previous day. I answered yes wondering how she knew. Well, remember the runner that day? Turns out it was one of the midwives and of course she told her. Jan mentionned to her that it was likely one of their patients because who else would labor in the park?
At last the midwife on call was available to check me. I lay on my side, unwilling to be on my back. Once done she smiled. I asked if it was a good thing. She said "Yes, you're 8cm. Go straight to the hospital, do not stop at go!"

During the last months of my pregnancy, people often asked how I felt, or relly how uncomfortable I was. The truth is, I was feeling great and told them so. Appart from a little heartburn, I really didn't have much side effects from pregnancy.
On February 18th though, thing started to change. Suddenly I had a much harder time sleeping, I was far more tired during the day as a result. I was also getting tired of sleeping on my side and walking up to an uncomfortable hip. As for Pumpkin she was a lot quieter than usual.
On Wednesday 20th. I had a chiropractic appointment, things felt different. Pumpkin started wiggling around again, and the chiropractor herself told me that the energies felt very different, but she couldn't tell if it meant upcoming labor or not. I also started getting nauseous. Nothing too strong, but it was there. I went to work non the less, it was supposed to be my last 3-11 shift before finally getting some day shifts.
Around 8pm, an odd feeling. Did I just peed my pants? Something that had not happened yet by the way. I went to the bathroom, no it was a pink tinged liquid. I sent a text message to Hubby telling him that I might have lost the mucus plug. But between him looking into our birth preparation folder and googling it, it turned out to be only discharge, yet a sign of something. As the evening went on, I started feeling some really mild contractions. They were different from Braxton-Hicks. Once back home, I told Hubbby that we would meet our Pumpkin soon. We warned my Godmother who was to attend the birth. She decided to stay in bed based on what we told her and to check with us in the morning. We went to bed as well, knowing we would need the rest no matter what.

I woke up around 4:30am to use the bathroom. As I was whipping, I had an odd feeling. I looked down to the toilet paper to find a gelatinous blob staring at my face. No doubt this time:I had just lost the mucus plug (what an horrid name by the way). Labor could start within a few hours or... weeks. It was only a sign that the cervix was dilating. Well n my case, it didn't take long. Shortly after I started feeling contractions. I could clearly tell when they started and when they ended. A sure sign of early labor. I think I went back to b,ed to try to rest a bit. But by 6-7am, I couldn't sleep anymore and went to the living room so as not to wake up Hubby. I also notified my Godmother so she could be on her way. Unlike the previous evening, these contractions were painful, cramp like, but they were still spaced out and irregular. I timed a few to find them anywhere between 8 to 12 minutes apart. I took it as a good sign. I worked the contractions on the yoga ball and on hands and knees on our chair. I think that's how Hubby found me when he finally got up.

My memories of the morning remain blurry. I think I had breakfast, I know we called the midwife to let her know and cancel the prenatal visit I was supposed to have that day, I also notified my work that I wouldn't come next day (Thursday was my day off). I worked the contractions in the bedroom and living room. I also wanted to go for a walk but I hestiated. In the end, Hubby motivated me knowing it's something I had visualized during pregnancy. I had imagined myself walking in the park while in labor. So around the middle of the afternoon, once a contraction was over, we hopped in the car. Of course, changing positions. triggered contractions, so as soon as I got in the car I got hit by one! Not so easy to manage it while sitting down. But I was happy to get some fresh air and go in a place where I had been running so much during pregnancy. I never walked so slow in my life! Of course in the middle of our walk I had to hide behind a bush to pee. Thankfully no one walked by! I had several contractions during our walk. Each time I would hang on to Hubby to manage hit (thankfully he had been climbing a lot and had good arm muscles). A couple with a child in a stroller went by and she said "I feel your pain girl". A runner came by too while I was in the middle of one and asked if everything was ok. "Early labor" we answered. When she went by again she wished us "blessings to you both".

I would like to introduce you to our daughter who was born last Friday. She is an awesome baby, as chill as her daddy. The first few days were a little stressful as we both learned breastfeeding but we're getting over the bump and Mom is a true milk factory... The Pumpkin is a little jaundiced but other than that she is doing great and we are learning to follow her rythm and live with little sleep. Thankfully we are very well surrounded.

As we arrived during the week, the site was fairly empty. Only a few climbers and an older dude who invited us to warm up by his fire. We did not declined the offer, it was also a chance to toast our breakfast. The dude was Terry, he volunteers there in exchange for a place for his tent. He is priceless, always cooking, offering things to taste, bringing climbers in neat spaces. We loved meeting him.

One of the spots where Terry took us was this stunning view over the valley:

But we were mainly there to climb. Well Hubby was, and for that he had what he needed. The rock formations were incredible, with all sorts of cool names, such as The Turtle.

There is the Mushroom, which can not be climbed.

One that I found beautiful but that is super hard to climb is the Skywalker with its wave.

On the other side of Skywalker is the Millipede with its odd bumps.

I admit it, I couldn't resist. I did let myself do an easy problem... I knew the problem was totally doable and that Hubby was ready to catch me if needed.

And to finish our trip, a beautiful sunset a few hundred yards from our tent.

Whether you like to boulder or not, the site is really worth going!

I've been wanting to tell yo how we announced the news to our friends for a while. Mind you, it's only been six months... It's one of my favorite moments of our pregnancy.
At about 14 weeks I reached the end of the first trimester. This is usually when the risk of miscarriage really drops and when most future-parents choose to make it official. It worked out great for us as it turned out to be the same week as Hubby's birthday. So we hit two birds with one stone. We invited a bunch of friend over for a pot-luck with the excuse of his birthday.
So here we are, gathered at home, chatting, munching. We were waiting for the right moment. But then some people announced they had to go "Oh stay a few more minutes, I'll bring the cake!". It actually worked out good because as two were about to leave, one arrived. So I brough the cake out. Hubby blew his candles and then I announced to everyone that I had a special present for him to open. I had in my hand the pink and red, well recognizable, Victoria Secret bag, the well known intimates brand in the US. I'll let you imagine the reactions : "Ooolala, what are you getting him?" "Is this PG-13?". Not to worry people.
So there, in front of his audience, my dear husband pulled out of the bag the onesie (pictured above) his step-sister had recently gifted us. Not quite what our friends were expecting. Although some did say later that there is a cause and effect...
In the meantime, I was watching our friend's reaction and saw a few jaws drop. They looked at us and I could see their brain storming. "Is this what we think it is?"... Yes it is we said smiling and welcoming the hugs of congratulations.

A few did ask if Hubby knew about it prior, which made me laugh. Of course he did, don't worry :)

In any case it was a really fun way to share the news with them.

Since the last pictures, the bump grew a good bit. We took the Pumpkin to HorsePens 40 at 26 weeks. You know so as to test camping during pregnancy... The week after I was all dressed up for Thanksgiving, and then I turned into an elf to decorate the Christmas Tree.

A Merry Christmas to you from our little family. I hope you had a good Christmas Eve last night and a beautiful day well surrounded by loved ones. As for us we were with family last night and a a good brunch this morning (pumpkin cinnamon rolls) after opening our presents with my family via Skype. The Lil'One was, it seems, quite interested by all these voices given its movements. Next year, we'll need an extra Christmas Stocking on the fire mantel :)

The Okefenokee swamp ("Land of the trembling earth" in native american) is located at the border of Florida. 43800 acres of peat-filled wetland which are protected under the title of National Wildlife Refuge. I haven't seen many swamps, especially large ones, so I wasn't going to miss the opportunity to see one; especially since it's far better to see it during winter. During summer it's simple, you get eaten alive by mosquitoes. Even with the cool temperatures, I still went home with a "Florida State Bird" bite, so I don't even want to think about it when it's hot.

We rented a canoe at the welcome center of the Steven Foster State Park. There are several entrances to the swamp, we picked the western one. For about twenty dollars we got 4 hours on the water, paddles and life jacket.

There is a little approach chanel allowing to practice the paddle.

After that, we found ourselves on Billy's Lake. A quiet and dark (because of the tanins) spread of water .

Well, the typical thing of the Southern swamp: a gator. It's the biggest we saw that day. My man would have had me believe that it was a youth. Yeah right, I don't think so. The thing is, we also got pretty close with our canoe, and I was upfront. Hubby kept on saying we were safe in our big canoe but I wasn't feeling all that brave. I was told that when there is good weather you can see many more. As for me, the three we saw were enough, not so sure how I would have felt surrounded by them. And yes, I know they were there, we just couldn't see them in the water.

To compare with it, here is a youngling, far smaller and far more to my liking!

We took our lunch break at Billy's Island were one can see the remains of the logging at the beginning of the century as well as a small cemetary. 600 people lived on the island at its height.

In 2007, a huge wildfire started in the area burning 600 000 acres. Traces of it are still visible. It's hard to imagine a tree burning while its roots are in the water, and yet...

After returning the canoe, we went on a stroll on the small trail at the entrance of the park where we encountered some less than fearful deers.

There are numerous chanels on the swamp which made us want to do a multiday trip. I think it could be fun to do in the spring, before the summer heat but during the flower blooms.

Of course after visiting Biltmore Estate, which is from the same time period, it seems a little small. But it's not from the same family fortune either... There were some interesting rooms non the less, such as the kitchen with its original refrigerator. To activate it the owners had ice blocks delivered that were placed directly in the refrigerator. Not all that practical nowadays but it's still far more decorative than the one in my kitchen.

The dining room had beautiful wood pannels. The senator had put aside oak pannels, but unfortunately the sawmill and the stored wood almost entirely burned in a fire right before construction started. As a result this is the only room with wood pannels.

Upstairs there are numerous bedrooms. Nowadays they are often used by brides getting ready prior to having their ceremony downstairs.

On the third floor there is a ballroom (which I forgot to photograph). It can only welcome 15 people at a time due to the current fire code and lack of emergency exit. To be honest it's amazing to think they had ladies climbing up the narrow stairs with their 19th century dresses.. There are two parlors adjacent to it, one for the ladiesk, one for the men. I loved their fireplaces.

So not bad for a few dollars, there are also some written information in each room if one wanted to find out more about it. The house is mostly empty but the architecture itself is enough to make it interesting.

I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! We celebrated our surrounded by family, locally. His sister and husband came from Florida, my Godfather and his wife from Georgia, their daughter from Ohio. A happy crowd gathered around the table.

There is so much I am thankful for this year. Our families and friends surrounding us with love. My husband who is here, by my side, against any storm we face. A solid roof over our head, a job that I enjoy with wonderful co-workers. Running a marathon. And mostly being pregant with a healthy pregnancy that has been going so well. I couldn't ask much more from life.

Not to worry we didn't starve. Well we almost did mind you as we were supposed to eat at 2 pm (and therefore had the lightest of breakfasts) yet only ate at 5:30pm. The grandpa got too tired and had to be driven back to the nursing home which delayed everything. I was famished. Thankfully we were able to eat the feathers of the veggie turkey (pictured above) while drooling over the (real) smoking turkey.

We got seated at last and hands flew to the dishes.

Three tables were needed, the hands were held, the benedicity given by Hubby's cousin, hostess, the Lil'One mentioned. Then we dig in the dishes: turkey and sauce, ham, green beans, corn pudding, cranberry sauce, mashes potatoes, stuffing and Brussels sprouts.

Dans mon assiette ça donnait ça:

Here is what it looked like in my plate:

Then we gathered around the fire, others in front of the TV, to enjoy some family time, but also to digest before dessert: apple pies, chocolate-caramel cake and poppy seed cake with its cream. Between the Lil'One and the wonderful meal my skin was stretched out, yet I managed to be full and not stuffed.

Next year there will be another mouth to feed... I'm not worried we had plenty of leftovers.

While we're barely a week away from Halloween, we still haven't decorated our place. In any case I'm not worried because we already have the pumpkin at least. Needless to say the Lil'One is growing well. After a nice growth spurt between week 15 and 16 our future dual citizen has been growing steadily.
The ultrasound showed a Lil'One measuring right on track and in good health. Now when it comes to it being a he or a she...you'll have to wait as we decided it would be a surprise.
However I am thinking of changing Lil'One's nickname to Ronaldo because the kid sure loves to kick. At 15 weeks, right after the midwife had told me it would be a few more weeks until I felt it, I felt in fact my firt quickening. That very week-end I also got my first kick. Since then it's only been increasing. In fact the Lil'One just said hi.
As for me, I'm good. A little back pain here and there but I have a good chiropractor. I've also experienced some acid reflux which has had me be very mindful of slowly chewing my food. All in all I can't complain and for now I'm still running, even though it seems painfully slow to me.

Bearwallow Mountain is visible from down below in the valley. The bare summit is covered with antennas. We tried to go a year or two ago, but the access was forbidden to the public. There were enough signs clearly directed to hikers. However Hubby learned from friends that the trail was now open, perfect for an end of day hike.

The gate no longer holds no access warnings. There is a sign at the beginning of the trail explaining that the owners gave an access easement to the Carolina Land Conservancy for a trail to be created as well as put most of the site under their protection. The trail isn't long: .9 mile going back and forth in the forest towards the summit.
On this beautiful fall day it was a real delight. The trees are changing colors, the air is crisp and sun provided a gorgeous light. Not to mention that we were alone on the trail, enjoying the calm of the forest.

Hubby had a hard time resisting to the boulders that were inviting him to climb along the trail.
The one below made me think of a face with an Aztec nose maybe and hair of lichens and ferns.

The forest was easing up, we were arriving at the summit. But we weren't alone, eyes were looking at us with curiosity...

A small herd of cows feeds at the summit, I think they help to maintain the low vegetation. As for us, it was mostly the view that kept us on the summit for a while.

To the right of the antennas (and the former fire tower) there is a beautiful oak tree forest. I could easily see myself opening up a picnic at the feet of the trees, admire the view while enjoying the sun and the breeze.

To go back down we decided to do a loop by following the forest road, quite bucolic in this season. No regrets because the hike down was easy and mostly we got a fun show by two little chipmunks. Those little critters always make me smile.

A small tradition to finish with: every time we go in the Hickory Nut Gap Gorgea area, we stop by the Flying Cloud Farm self serve, honor system, produce stand. The farmers trust people to pay the correct price and leave with their goods. I couldn't help but think about our child to be. I can't wait for him/her to be old enough to follow this tradition with us.
To go hike, stop by, pick some produce together, teach the Lil'One to respect the produce and those who grow them by leaving the right price. To teach trust and respect...

I love when my MIL sends us care packages from Hawaii. The latest had three types of exotic teas just for me: Mango Maui, Hibiscus Honey Lemon and Passion Fruit Napali. For Hubby some coffee and for the two of us veggie chips, macadamia nuts as well as the last three Maui Magazines. The only problem is that it really makes me want to travel to Hawaii again...

Which kind of care package do you prefer: comfort goods from home or exotic?
