Joyeux 80 Ans Mamie

Happy 80th Birthday Mamie

If I went to France it was first and formost to surprise my Mamie on her 80th birthday. We all got together at my Dad's, my grandmother having no idea that a party was organized in her honnor, even less who would be there.
You see she thought my brother was in Antibes, my cousin at his girlfriend's family dinner. So she only hoped to see my other cousin, my dad and my aunt...
Via a rebus game my aunt lead her to my Dad's. As for me I was hidding in my dad's car, wrapped in a warm coat. I had this great plan where I was going to call and pretend I was in the US, ask her what she was eating and say "it sounds good, I'm coming." That was without counting on emotions.

You see I was not the only surprise. There was a lot of family here, but the also her "war brothers". It's a story I will have to share but to make it quick it's the children of the family who welcomed her during the war when children were evacuated from Toulouse, and they kept really strong ties since.
So when I called she was already only half listening and asking me if I would be home that night so she could call me back. I said yes without telling which house that would be...
Two minutes later I was ringing at the door. She took me in her arms and then quickly went back chatting with people. We all understood that this was a lot to take at once and let her enjoy the party knowing that she was on her little cloud and would realize things later. Just like it took her twenty viewing or so of our wedding video to realized that I did my vows in French even though she was here that day.
What matters is that it was a beautiful celebration. She ate little, far too busy chatting (as usual) with everyone around the table.

Well it did not stop me from eating, especially the sautéed foie gras with apples. I took second servings, it is indeed a rare treat on my side of the Atlantic. Du Saumon a la sauce Aneth.

Salmon with dill sauce.

Un gazpacho en entre-mets.

Gazpacho as an amuse-bouche.

Roast beef, cepes, shredded carrots and beets, green beans, sweet potatoes gratin. Impossible to finish my plate. I have this (justified) feeling that all I did was eat during my first three days in France.

A plate of cheese that I truly enjoyed. I think I ate as much cheese in a week that I would normally eat in 2-3 months. So what? I can't find those here!

And of course dessert. There we had no choice, what Mamie loves are pastry puffs filled with pastry cream of whipped cream. The cousins got together to light up the 80(?)candles.

As the good grand-children that we are, we let her check that her blowing abilities are still as good. Yes Mamie you can still talk non stop. My little brother did however offer her to bring thje hair dryer if needed.

Of course there was a large bowl of whipped cream just for my Mamie. But this also mean a family tradition, the chantilly food fight. I think I only escaped thanks to my camera, however 80 years old or not my grandmother got her chantilly face mask, and she was not alone.

A beautiful day with my family, full of emotions and sharing. I keep in mind that moment when my great-aunt turned toward me after a game of "guess who?" and dissolved in a puddle of tears. And even if she didn't ask me directly my Mamie still wondered when Hubby was going to get Hubby out of his hiding spot.

  1. Wow, that sounds like an amazing day. So good you have those memories.

And I totally got jipped when I tried Foie Gras in Paris -- I need to try the real stuff, not the pate.

  3. @Natalie: It was a lot of fun, and a lot of emotions for my grandmother.

As far as Foie Gras, the really thing is not a pate, it's a whole piece that is sliced. You can either eat it fresh or sautee it. My grandparents always taught me to just put it on the bread, you don't smooch it on it.
